Little River Canyon National Preserve

I wanted to take the girls on a quick road trip over their Spring Break to serve as a practice run for our two week haul out West. After spending some time with family, Little River Canyon was our first stop.

Little River Canyon is up in the Northern Corner of Alabama, and not terribly far from Atlanta, Birmingham, or even Nashville. Over eons, Little River itself has cut through sandstone to create one of the Southeast's deepest canyons. Cliffs rise some 600 ft above the wild river below. Probably the easiest way to experience the park is on the scenic drive. From several overlooks most anyone can walk out and view the canyon, the river, and several waterfalls.

The girls and I started at the visitor center where each earned a JR Ranger badge, and we ate a quick picnic lunch. From there we took our time traveling down the scenic drive, stopping along the way to enjoy the scenery and marvel at the view. With the need to get to Great Smokey Mountain National Park before nightfall we didn't do as much hiking as we normally would. In the end, the drive through certainly gave us a taste of what we could look forward to on our next visit.

Happy Trails!
